Overcoming Dental Phobia

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 529

Dental phobia is characterized by a severe fear towards the dentist. Most of the time, this can result in damage or loss of teeth because of the delay or the absence of dental care that sacrifices both their teeth and health condition. Dental phobia can actually lower people’s self-esteem for their teeth’s appearance can cause them to be embarrassed and to withdraw from their social life.

The quality of your teeth can have a very significant impact on your appearance, social relations, career, health and overall confidence. For most patients, their fear of the dentist stems from a past traumatic experience with the dentist. It could be an experience during their childhood when they were held against their will on the dental chair, or they were ignored when they were in deep pain. Such childhood traumatic experiences accompanied by panic can have a deep and long lasting effect on one’s memory, they will feel uncomfortable, and helpless every single time a dental visit comes up. Patients who suffer from dental phobia can have panic attacks and sedation can be very helpful under such situations.

Some patients actually undergo a difficult experience of getting numb after obtaining an injection from the dentist. Feelings of anxiousness make them very sensitive even to slight sensations because of their emotion towards pain. For other patients, they still feel pain during a dental care procedure because of certain reasons like having sensitive teeth or the presence of infections.

Still for some, there is the fear of needles. But then, new techniques such as gels or anesthetic pads can be administered without the necessity to pierce the skin. Sedation by means of an elixir or a pill can be used prior to an injection.

It is important that if you are one of those people who suffer from dental phobia, you should realize that there are many people out there ready to help you with your condition. Take the time to find the right dentist for you to whom you could communicate your special needs and concerns. He will help create a treatment plan that is most suited for your long-term dental care needs. Your chosen dentist should be armed with the right knowledge, tools, experience and patience for your treatment plan. Be open to procedures such as distraction and relaxation techniques, oral medications (to help you relax), general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and even laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide) to make you feel as comfortable as much as possible while receiving the needed dental care.

Today, there is a great change for dentists. They no longer just focus on the patient’s teeth, but focus more on the treatment of the patient. They now know the importance of communication with their patients. Patients can openly discuss their fears and they are more at ease knowing that when they complain that they are in pain, the dentist will listen and they are in control. Also, modern procedures and new technological discoveries have helped eliminate most of the discomfort associated with dental care.
