The Oozing Truth About Dental Abscess

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 548

A regular visit to the dentist will reveal any dental and oral problems early. These include cavities, gingivitis, lumps, sores and other dental and oral anomalies. One of the most common dental problems that can be averted by a regular visit to the dentist is tooth abscess. Tooth abscess initially starts as a dental decay. What seems to be an innocent dot of dental cavity may soon become an annoying dental infection if left untreated. The dental infection can progress further into the less protected portion of the tooth, which is the pulp cavity. A collection of pus usually results when there is tooth infection. This causes swelling within the tooth and results to a painful toothache. Once the infection reaches the pulp, it can further spread into the tissues surrounding the tip of the tooth’s root. This sometimes creates an abscess around the root. When the infection already affects the supporting alveolar bone, the tooth may loosen. The loosened tooth will usually allow pus to enter the surrounding tissues. This can also drain out beside the tooth. When drainage is unavailable, swelling, pain and fever may result. This can also result to enlarged adjacent lymph nodes. The bacteria from dental decay can also spread to surrounding tissues including the gums, cheek, throat, or even facial bones.

Your dentist will usually prescribe antibiotics to help curb the infection. However, a complete dental treatment is needed to cure the disease. If abscess develops at the deep end of the tooth’s root, drainage may be necessary. Drilling into the tooth usually does this. After drainage is provided, your dentist will usually perform root canal therapy. Cleaning out, disinfecting and filling the pulp cavity and root canals does this. If root canal is not possible, extraction may be the last resort.

A person suffering from tooth abscess may experience symptoms that include toothache, pain when chewing and bitter taste in the mouth. Additionally, the affected tooth may exhibit sensitivity to both hot and cold stimuli. The patient may have foul or bad breath. There may be a general feeling of discomfort or illness and fever. The person may have swollen glands on the neck. In some severe cases, the upper or lower jaw may show signs of swelling.

Experts suggest these few home care remedies for those suffering from tooth abscess.

1. Make a salt solution. This should contain a half teaspoonful of salt, which should be added to a glass of water. The salt solution should be heated to a tolerable temperature probably similar to a hot morning beverage like coffee or tea. Sip the hot solution and let it stand in the affected area for a minute or two. Expel the solution and replace with another sip until you consume the whole glass. This should be done every hour or as often as you want. Try to experiment with both hot and cold water. Sometimes, cold water gives more relief than hot.

2. The pain may be relieved temporarily by putting cotton soaked in oil of cloves into the dental cavity.

Finally, a prompt treatment by a dentist will provide your tooth a better chance of survival, a better way to control the abscess and better treatment procedures to end your agony.
